For students, trainees, direct support professionals, healthcare providers, volunteers, patients, caregivers and community members.  

Provided by Cleveland Clinic Nevada in collaboration with the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.  Funds provided by the Health Resource Service Administration are shared between these two institutions.  All programs are offered at no cost.

Virtual Reality Training Programs

This is a 3D computer-generated environment that simulates a realisticor imaginary situation using advanced AI technology.

VR case scenario #1:

Meeting Unmet Needs Resulting from Behavior or Psychological Symptoms Associated with Dementia.

Apply your skills in recognizing signs and symptoms and responding to behaviors associatied with dementia.  You will identify common behavioral and psychological symptoms common in dementia, determine the functional impact on behavioral and communication in patients with dementia, recognize unmet needs in behavioral symptoms associated with dementia and practice person-centered care utilizing effective communication techniques.

Suitable for clinical, non-clinical, direct support trainees and professionals.

*E-learning modules “Meeting Unmet Needs Resulting from Behavior or Psychological Symptoms Associated with Dementia” is a pre-requisite requirement for this training.

VR case scenario #2:

Cognitive Care Planning and Evaluation.  

Apply your knowledge and skills on a simulated patient with cognitive concerns. You will be able to experience the benefits of early diagnosis, analyze diagnostic tools and practices that assist in making a diagnosis, examine and interpret common tests performed in patients with memory concerns and construct dialogue for delivering a diagnosis.

Suitable for clinical trainees and professionals.

Practical Skills for Dementia Care (Optional add on)

Learn the theory about what’s happening in the brain along with practical techniques, so you not just survive but thrive as a care provider.  Teepa Snow’s Positive Approach to Care’s (PAC) mission is to transform the experience of dementia – worldwide for families, care communities, home care agencies and healthcare professionals. PAC offers workable solutions, skills, and approaches to bring real hope, possibility, and significant shifts to your experience of dementia and dementia care.

Dementia Capable Care of Adults with Intellectual Disabilities and Dementia

An evidence-informed training for direct support professionals that provides an introduction to Dementia and Intellectual Disabilities to obtain a basic understanding of dementia/ID and care techniques and be able to create a dementia care plan.

What you’ll learn: What is dementia, types of dementia and stages, planning for impact of dementia, models for individual and group care, communication techniques, environmental adaptations, managing BPSDs, and creating a dementia care plan.

Caregiver Training Program
Interested in a rewarding career caring for seniors or are you considering or currently working are a Personal Care Assistants (PCA), Certified Medical Assistants (CNA), Medical Assistants (MA’s), other direct support care role?  This course is designed as a preparation course for our direct support workforce. You will learn and apply the following skills to become a high-quality caregiver:
  • Hand Hygiene
  • Toileting
  • Health aleration simulation
  • Vital signs
  • Safety/fall risks and reduction
  • Mobility/transfers
  • Chronic disease management
  • Dementia, depression and delirium
  • Nutrition
  • Medication management
  • Stroke
This training program consists of a total of 20 hours of in-person training (7.5 hours per day, one day per week for three weeks) and includes an 8 hour simulation training with skills validation, CPR training certificate (AHA), resume coaching, development, and mosk interviews.  A formal graduation ceremony is held on the forth week and includes a career fair with on-the-spot interviews (for those interested) directly following the graduation ceremony.   Attendance is required for each of the three main training session.
Participants in this program not only gain valuable skills to take with them wherever their career journey leads them, but also have the opportunity for personal and career growth.
Trainings are held in the Spring, Summer and Fall each year. 

Dealing with Dementia

Suitable for both professional and family caregivers, Dealing with Dementia is an evidence-based program developed by the Rosalynn Carter Institute and involves creating a supportive and understanding environment for the person with dementia, focusing on their well-being and remaining needs, and adapting to the challenges of the disease. This program focus on the follwoing topics: 

  • Understanding and support
  • Creating a safe and supportive environment
  • Supporting the individual with dementia
  • Self-care for caregivers

Looking for further opportunities to grow your skillset in working directly with older adults?  The below activities are led by Cleveland Clinic Nevada’s staff and offer shadowing and direct community experience in working side-by-side with older adults. 6 Ways to Build Your Brain Health Community Workshop

A workshop for reducing your risk for dementia
Train-the-trainer Teaching/Community Experience Opportunity (Leader training)

Gain community and group facilitation experience by becoming a trained facilitator in Cleveland Clinic Nevada’s new 6 Ways to Build Your Brain Health six-week workshop.  You will teach community members about the six pillars of brain health (exercise, nutrition, managing other medical conditions, sleep and relaxation, mental fitness, and social connection) and how simple lifestyle modifications  can reduce the risk of developing dementia by up to 45% in those with mild cognitive impairment and healthy individuals.

Community Memory Screenings

Using the Brief Alzheimer’s Screening (BAS) tool 

Cleveland Clinic also offers the opportunity to gain community experience by conducting memory and/or balance screening with a community setting.  Receive training to provide free, community-based memory screenings at community health fairs, events and community-based service organizations.  These quick, noninvasive, confidential screenings, consisting of a series of questions and/or tasks which test cognitive functions, are an important tool to detect a potential memory problem.

Cognitive Rehabilitation Therapy

Provided by Partner: Moneta Health

*Participants must meet specific criteria to qualify at no charge

Better brain health for better aging.  Moneta Health provides an effective and easy to use use telephone based Cognitive Rehabilitation Therapy (CBT) service designed to help you stay engaged in life and live independently for longer. CBT aims to improve cognitive function and daily life activities in individuals with mild cognitive impairment and dementia. It includes a 60-minute brain health evaluation with a licensed therapist, therapist, personalized intensive cognitive therapy and an ongoing prevention maintenance program.
