Dementia Care Education and Training Programs

For students, trainees, direct support professionals, healthcare providers, volunteers, patients, caregivers and community members.  

Provided by Cleveland Clinic Nevada in collaboration with the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.  Funds provided by the Health Resource Service Administration are shared between these two institutions.  All programs are offered at no cost.

Virtual Reality (VR) Training Programs

Case scenario #1:

Addressing Unmet Needs Behind Behavioral Expressions in Individuals living with Dementia.

Apply your skills in recognizing signs and symptoms and responding to behaviors associatied with dementia.  You will identify common behavioral expressions associated with dementia, determine the functional impact on behavioral and communication in patients with dementia, recognize unmet needs in behavioral symptoms associated with dementia and practice person-centered care utilizing effective communication techniques.

Who should attend: Clinical, non-clinical, and direct support professionals.
Prerequisite: E-learning module “Addressing Unmet Needs Behind Behavioral Expressions in Individuals Living with Dementia”.

 

Case scenario #2:

Cognitive Care, Planning and Evaluation.  

Apply your knowledge and skills on a simulated patient with cognitive concerns. You will be able to experience the benefits of early diagnosis, analyze diagnostic tools and practices that assist in making a diagnosis, examine and interpret common tests performed in patients with memory concerns and construct dialogue for delivering a diagnosis.

Who should attend: Clinical trainees and professionals.
Prerequisite: E-learning module “Cognitive Care Planning and Evaluation.”

Practical Skills for Dementia Care 

Gain a clear understanding of what’s happening in the brain and learn practical techniques to provide compassionate, person-centered care.  Led by Cleveland Clinic Nevada’s PAC Certified Independent Trainer, this course is based on Teepa Snow’s Positive Approach to Care® (PAC), which offers proven strategies to improve the dementia care experience.

Who Should Attend: Direct support professionals.

Dementia Capable Care of Adults with Intellectual Disabilities and Dementia

Work with Adults with IDD and Dementia

An evidence-informed training designed to support adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) who are at risk for – or living with dementia. 

Who Should Attend:Direct support professionals.

What You’ll Learn:

  • Understanding dementia in people with IDD
  • Early detection and screening
  • Health, wellness, and care coordination

  • Managing behavioral and psychological symptoms

Caregiver Training Program

Caregiver Training Program

Start a rewarding career caring for seniors or strengthen your skills as a Personal Care Assistant (PCA), Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Medical Assistant (MA), or other direct support role.

What You’ll Learn:

  • Hand hygiene
  • Toileting
  • Health alteration simulation
  • Vital signs
  • Safety & fall prevention
  • Mobility & transfers
  • Chronic disease management
  • Dementia, depression & delirium
  • Nutrition
  • Medication management
  • Stroke care

Program Details:

  • 20 hours of in-person training (6 hrs/day, 1 day/week for 3 weeks)
  • 8-hour simulation with skills validation
  • CPR certification (AHA)
  • Resume coaching & mock interviews
  • Graduation ceremony + career fair with on-the-spot interviews

Schedule: Spring, Summer, and Fall sessions.

Attendance: Required for all three training days.
Enrollment: Due to high demand, only 25 applicants will be selected through a screening process.

Looking for further opportunities to grow your skillset in working directly with older adults?  The below activities are led by Cleveland Clinic Nevada’s staff and offer shadowing and direct community experience in working side-by-side with older adults. A workshop for reducing your risk for dementia

Leader Training

Help others reduce their risk of dementia through simple lifestyle changes. Become a trained facilitator for Cleveland Clinic’s Healthy Brains Workshop and make a positive impact in your community.

 

What You’ll Do:

  • Teach the six pillars of brain health:
    Exercise | Nutrition | Managing Medical Conditions | Sleep & Relaxation | Mental Fitness | Social Connection
  • Lead a six-week workshop (2 hours per day, 1 day per week) at community locations.
  • Simple lifestyle modifications  can reduce the risk of developing dementia by up to 45% in those with mild cognitive impairment and healthy individuals.

Who should attend:  Those seeking teaching and/or community or group facilitation experience.

 

 

Memory Screening Training

Conduct Memory Screenings in the Community

Help identify potential memory concerns by providing quick, confidential screenings using the Brief Alzheimer’s Screening (BAS) tool.

What You’ll Do:

  • Receive 30- minute online training led by Cleveland Clinic staff to conduct free memory screenings at health fairs, events, and community organizations.
  • Screenings are noninvasive, take just a few minutes, and include simple questions and tasks to check cognitive function.
  • Play an important role in early detection and community health.

Opening Minds through Art (OMA) is an award-winning program for people living with dementia. It promotes creative expression and social engagement through person-centered care.

How It Works:

  • Each older adult is paired with a trained volunteer for guidance during art-making.
  • Volunteers support the process but let the artist make all creative decisions.
  • Sessions end with a gallery exhibition celebrating the artists and raising awareness about their creative abilities.

This free, phone-based program helps individuals with mild cognitive impairment or dementia improve daily functioning and stay independent longer.

What’s Included:

  • 60-minute brain health evaluation with a licensed therapist
  • Personalized cognitive therapy sessions
  • Ongoing prevention and maintenance program

Eligibility: Participants must meet specific criteria to qualify at no cost.
